Turkish foreign minister to visit north for consultations

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu is expected to visit the north next week for consultations with the Turkish Cypriot leadership ahead of the five-party summit on the Cyprus problem, reports said.

According to news portal MaviVatanKibris, Cavusoglu is set to visit the north on February 2 for consultations with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar about the summit which is expected to be held in Greentree, New York in early March.

In the meantime, Tatar had on Wednesday evening a telephone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

According to media reports in the north, Tatar discussed with Erdogan the latest developments on the Cyprus problem.

Tatar also thanked the Turkish president for the delivery of the vaccines against coronavirus. The north has already received 20,000 doses of China’s Sinovac doses while another 20,000 doses arrived from Turkey on Thursday.

The island’s two communities and the three guarantors – Greece, Turkey, and the UK – agreed to attend an informal meeting to be convened by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, to discuss the way forward on the Cyprus problem.
