Paphos police investigating €21,000 internet scam

Paphos police on Monday said they are investigating an internet scam amounting to €21,000 following a complaint by a permanent resident last December.

The complaint was made by the director of a transport company, a female British permanent resident of Cyprus who had sent the money to another company, based in the UK.

However, before the transaction was completed, she received another email, seemingly from the same company, asking her to deposit the money in a different account.

It was later proven the account did not belong to the company.

In a warning to the public, Paphos police spokesman Michalis Ioannou asked people to not trust unknown email addresses and transfer money to perpetrators who “obviously want to trick them”.

Interpol and the bank are assisting in the investigations.

According to Ioannou, it appears the money has been received and attempts are being made to identify the suspects.
