Longing for song

vakia stavrou 007

There is nothing quite like the endorphins experienced when listening to live music and with the pandemic locking down bars, music venues and theatres for most of the past year, there’s a deep longing for song. And that is exactly what the Rialto Theatre will present on Friday with a performance titled Our souls longing for songs.

Artist Vakia Stavrou, accompanied by pianist Manolis Neofytou, will perform a repertoire of beloved songs from every corner of the globe, in her own charming, simple and natural manner. “In a peculiar era where everything is re-organised and disorganised,” say organisers, “constantly re-adjusting and changing, our only lifeline, our hope and light, is found in the songs lasting through the years, those resisting time, those never forgotten. At every concert, our lips still whisper the lyrics, despite the decades that have elapsed. They remind us of our very own childhood and teenage memories, of feasts and celebrations, of days with friends and old love stories.”

As such, the two artists will take the stage at Rialto Theatre performing for a small number of audience members allowed in and for the wider public through a virtual live-stream.

Two days later, more music will sound at the Theatre as ten artists and performers, ranging from narrators to pianists and vocalists will present a tribute inspired by the 100th anniversary of the birth of Antonis Samarakis and Melina Merkouri. Music and narration will be combined to honour the work of the two great Greek artists in an 80-minute show on Sunday 28.
