Meet the breeds: Arabia’s fleet-footed Saluki

Every pet deserves a loving and respectful home: please only consider acquiring a pet if you will be able to take care of its long-term needs. Also, consider choosing your animal companion from a shelter, where there are so many wonderful furry friends who need a forever home.

In this video, we learn all about the Saluki – also called the gazelle hound, the Arabian hound, and the Persian greyhound – a breed of desert dog famed for their speed.

The Saluki is a standardised breed developed from sighthounds – dogs that hunt primarily by sight rather than scent. The modern breed is typically deep-chested and long-legged, and most closely related to the Afghan hound.

In the old days, Bedouins of the Arabian Peninsula relied on the Saluki to hunt for gazelle. Today, they are more likely to race for sport.
