How we think about things and interpret our situation creates a sense of either calm or stress.

In this video, marriage and family therapist Emma McAdam, host of the Therapy in a Nutshell YouTube channel, explains how to recognise and manage times of perceived danger.

When we believe we are in peril, she says, our body and mind create the fear response – the same physical anxiety reaction as if we were in actual physical danger – propelling us toward ‘fight’, ‘flight’ or ‘freeze’.

Therefore, learning to soothe our nervous system at such times is paramount to our wellbeing, and, to this end, McAdam outlines four effective practices to help us feel safe, even when our minds tell us falsely that we are facing a threat.
