Musicians from Finland and Cyprus will meet on stage next week as the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra welcomes two distinguished and dynamic musicians from abroad. Petros Gospodinov, the former principal cellist of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and now the solo cellist at Finland’s Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, as well as maestro Tomas Djupsjöbacka, Chief Conductor of the Vaasa City Orchestra will join Cyprus musicians for the Premiere 2 concerts on November 4 in Nicosia and November 5 in Paphos.

Gospodinov and Djupsjöbacka will join forces to present with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra the Cyprus premiere of the Cello concerto by Jaakko Kuusisto, Chief Conductor of the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and composer. His concerto was created at the initiative of the renowned cellist Arto Noras, and commissioned by the Naantali Music Festival, of which he is artistic director.

The Cello concerto is originally scored for a small orchestra, in addition to strings, only timpani and vibraphone are called for. As for its form, it largely follows the traditional concerto concept with relatively fast first and last movements and a slow movement between them.

This Cyprus meets Finland concert also presents works by two of the most esteemed composers of these countries. The Suite for string orchestra by Cypriot composer Phanos Dymiotis, written in 1993, and Jean Sibelius’ Pelléas et Mélisande Suite, a musical expression of the dramatic story of Maeterlinck’s symbolic play by the same name.
