Dipa says too early to confirm presidential candidate

Dipa (the Democratic Front) and allies the Cooperation of Democratic Forces have not taken any decisions yet regarding the 2023 presidential elections as they are focused on other priorities, its president Marios Garoyian said on Tuesday.

In a televised press conference, Garoyian said that no decision will be taken before March 2022, adding that the party was “not allergic to any candidate”.

The centrist party and its allies both broke away from Diko and elected four MPs in the May 2021 parliamentary elections. They are expected to be wooed by both the right and the left once coalition-making gets underway.

“We have decided that we will not become involved in premature, dangerous talk about the presidential elections before March because Cyprus is small and not more than four to five months are needed for every alliance and every candidate to convey their messages to society,” he said.

Instead, he urged political parties to focus on justice and local government reform, both of which are before the House, as well as issues concerning corruption.
