The cabinet on Wednesday approved a special €1.5 million plan to support local authorities in creating appropriate facilities for the temporary care of stray dogs.

The proposed plan aims at providing financial support for collaboration between local authorities in accordance with the requirements of animal protection and welfare regulations.

The total cost of the plan will come to €1.5m for the period 2022-2024.

The operation of these facilities will focus on efforts for the adoption of stray dogs, the cabinet said in a statement.

District administrations will be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the projects led by local authorities, while the veterinary services will be responsible for approving the specifications of the sites, to ensure that the requirements for the welfare legislation are met, the cabinet said.
