Snow fell on the Pentadaktylos mountains as freezing weather continued islandwide on Saturday.

Parts of the mountain range, particularly closer to Kyrenia, were covered by a layer of snow, a very rare occurrence.

Light powdery snow was also reported at Bellapais and the village of Alefka, with cold winds and temperatures falling below freezing inland and on the mountains.

According to the met office, more snow and sleet are expected throughout the day and through the night in mountainous areas and might reach semi-mountainous areas, while frost is expected as well. In addition, isolated showers are expected in some areas inland.

The temperature will reach 11C inland, 13C on the coast and around -2C on mountain peaks. Overnight it is expected to fall to -1C inland, 3C along the south eastern coast, 5C along the northwest, and -8C in the mountains.

All roads leading to Troodos were closed to all vehicles except four-wheel drives and those using snow chains on Saturday morning.
