Coronavirus: 5,286 new infections, one death

A 63-year-old man died from coronavirus, the health ministry announced on Monday as another 5,286 new infections were detected from 114,066 tests, a positivity rate of 4.63 per cent.

The new death was recorded on Sunday, raising the total of coronavirus fatalities to 915, the ministry said in its daily briefing.

It added there were 149 patients in state hospitals, of whom 31 were in serious condition, including seven who were intubated. Another 21 patients continue to be intubated in ICUs after they stopped being infectious.

Some 54.37 per cent of hospitalised patients were unvaccinated.

According to the ministry, the new cases were traced from 109,326 rapid and 4,740 PCR tests.

Most of them, 3,200, were detected after 52,037 rapid tests carried out privately, while another 1,604 cases were traced during 57,289 rapid tests at the free health ministry’s testing sites.

An additional 347 cases tested positive after a total of 1,627 PCR tests carried out privately, while 140 cases were detected during contact tracing after 528 PCR and 830 rapid tests.

Of the new infections, 45 were detected at nursing homes following 1,424 tests, a positivity rate of 3.16 per cent.

Meanwhile, another 563 coronavirus cases were recorded in the northern part of the island, Turkish Cypriot media reported, out of 21,940 tests.
