The cabinet has approved a six-month temporary urban planning permit to slaughterhouse Cypra Ltd in its effort to resolve the environmental issues related to noise and odor emissions in the Mitsero-Kato Moni area.

Interior Minister Nicos Nouris announced on Wednesday that as a prerequisite to the granting of the permit, Cypra must produce an environmental management study drawn by specialists within two months and submit it for evaluation by the environment, labour inspection and veterinary services departments. The study will focus on mitigating the impact of odour emissions resulting from Cypra which also manages animal waste and on the setting of the maximum capacity of waste collection and management.

“The cabinet acknowledges that the environmental issues and odor emissions are the result of the current sewage tanks that operate in the area and notes that the study will address these and make recommendations on how to better manage them,” Nouris said, but warned that the permit will be annulled if not not complied with within the timeframe.

Moreover, Nouris pointed to the strategic plan part the Recovery and Resilience plan that will make available almost €30 million towards addressing noise emissions and the wider environmental degradation of the area.

Agriculture Minister Costas Kadis said that the environment department is examining an application for a licence for another livestock waste management unit in the area.
