One of two fires in Paphos district brought under control (Update 1)

A fire that broke out in Kritou Terra around 1.30 pm on Monday was brought under control a few hours later as the fire service continued to deal with a second fire which broke out around the same time in nearby Drousia.

Fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis tweeted that a crew was dispatched to Drousia with one fire engine, accompanied by four forestry department aircraft and a National guard helicopter.

Meanwhile, land crews were sent to Kritou Terra to deal with the second fire, which burned dry leaves and wild vegetation.

Four forestry department aircraft, a National Guard helicopter and three fire engines from Paphos fire service rushed to the scene along with two bulldozers, two vehicles from local community councils and a forestry department fire engine.

The fire was brought under control around 3pm after burning 1.5 hectares of wild vegetation and some carob trees.

Firefighters stayed in the area to monitor the situation and put out the last of the flames.
