Famagusta is the beacon of the Cyprus solution said presidential candidate Achilleas Demetriades during his visit at the occupied part of the district.

Early on Sunday morning Demetriades had a walking tour around Mediaeval Famagusta and Varosha which he described as an “open museum of history”.

The fenced off mediaeval city should be declared a Unesco world heritage site, the 2023 presidential candidate said, welcoming the work completed so far by the bicommunal technical committee for the preservation of the island’s cultural heritage.

His tour included the walls and ramparts, Othello’s tower, Ayios Nicolaos, Ayios Georgios Exorinos as well as churches from other Christian denominations. Administrative officer Katie Economidou gave historical descriptions during the tour, the candidate’s announcement said.

Demetriades also visited Varosha, the abandoned ghost town and noted that in the event of a Cyprus settlement, the reconstruction of the town should be included in the EU budget.

“With serious work, persistence and will, we can achieve it,” the presidential candidate said, noting that first, “we need to regain our credibility”.

He said that using the two ‘keys’ the gas and Euro-Turkish relationship, “we have to convince that we are interested in the solution.”
