Candidates sending texts to voters on polling day (Updated)

Personal data protection commissioner Irene Loizidou Nicolaidou

A number of voters on Sunday reported they received text messages from presidential candidates calling on them to go vote.

Data protection commissioner Irene Loizidou said there were different cases her office would be investigating starting Monday, and the complaints concerned more than one candidate.

Any form of advertisement, including text messages are illegal on the day and eve of the vote.

Loizidou said she would announce more details on Monday when her office would process all the collected data.

Apart from these reports, she added everything had gone smoothly and all voting stations had adhered to the rules, based on the inspections carried out by her office until Sunday afternoon.
