We must protect national health scheme Gesy without changing its philosophy, Disy leader Annita Demetriou said on Wednesday, expressing the party’s readiness to discuss proposals for its improvement.

She was speaking after a series of meetings between Disy’s leadership and Gesy operator Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), the state health services organisation (Okypy), the Cyprus medical association, and the federation of patients’ associations Osak.

In a press release, Demetriou said that these meetings were held four years since the establishment of Gesy, “the largest social reform in the country,” adding that within this context they focused on the ways in which the challenges faced by the scheme can be addressed today.

For Disy, there are two main areas of focus, she said; on one hand, the more efficient provision of quality services and on the other hand, the financial viability of the system.

Demetriou said her party is ready to support any proposal that moves along these two axis, and noted that transparency and control of the system to deal with abuses are of utmost importance.

“We will continue to monitor Gesy’s course, in a way that will be beneficial for the public and more broadly the healthcare sector as a whole,” she finally said.
