Apollon protest ends without incident (Updated)

A scheduled protest by fans of the Apollon football club ended without incident on Thursday.

The fans were protesting about the five-month prison sentence earlier imposed on two Apollon fans.

Protesters, numbering about 100, walked from their club house to the Limassol police headquarters at around 7pm.

No incidents occurred. The fans handed a memo to the police and then headed back to the Apollon club house, after which they dispersed.

Police were taking no chances, deploying a large number of officers, some of them brought from other districts. The riot squad was also deployed.

A crisis management centre had also been set up in Limassol to monitor the situation.

The water cannon vehicle was also on scene. Dubbed ‘Aiantas’ (Ajax in Greek), the water cannon drew a great deal of negative publicity two years ago during protests in Nicosia when a girl suffered permanent eye damage after she was hit by the high-velocity water.
