The local scene is never quiet when it comes to children, literally and figuratively. This weekend, the pick of entertainment for children of all ages ranges far and wide to include theatre productions, workshops, and a unique experience in a gallery after closing time.
In celebration of International Museum Day, the Coco-Creativity Centre is organising a kind of sleepover for children from nine to 12 years old at the A.G.
Leventis Gallery in Nicosia. This one-of-a-kind event will offer children the chance to interact with the gallery on a more personal level, along with exciting surprises and educational workshops.
The event will begin at 5.30pm and end at 11.30pm. To reserve your places, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or call 22-668838.
Saturday also has an educational feel, with two workshops offered in Nicosia.
The first, to be held at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation under the name Pixilation – A Special Type of Animation, is aimed at children from eight to 12 years old. The animator and 3D artist Electra Chrysanthou will introduce the children to alternative animation techniques and invite them to discover creative ways of using a camera. Also, through theatre games, improvisation and dramatisation, the children will become the protagonists of their own short film.
This three-hour workshop is free, and is also being organised on the occasion of International Museum Day.
Also celebrating the international day dedicated to museums and culture is the Loukia and Michalis Zampelas Art Museum, which will also run a workshop for children from six to 12 years old on Saturday morning.
The two-hour artistic workshop, under the name Recycled Kaleidoscope, will be led by artist Stefanos Karababas, who will teach the participants how to use recycled materials to create their own colourful lens to take home with them. While working with the materials given to them and with the inspiration of knowing how kaleidoscopes form exciting shapes and patterns, the children will put their imaginations and creative skills to excellent use.
Younger children can enjoy a pick of three plays over the weekend.
The play The 3 Little Pigs and the Wolf Lilykos will be presented by the Vestiario Children’s Theatre in Larnaca on Saturday and in Famagusta on Sunday.
The classic story by the Brothers Grimm will be re-told with more humour, more theatrics and more running around than ever. Directed by Yiannis Spanos, the joyful play will get kids of all ages laughing with its neverending chases and the fact that no matter how hard the wolf tries, he will never win.
If pigs running about the place isn’t what your kids find fun, they might prefer flying boys who never grow up.
Technohoros Ethal in Limassol will present four performances of the famous Broadway musical Peter Pan Jr over the weekend. Based on the Disney film and J.M. Barrie’s enchanting play, Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. is a modern version of the timeless tale about a boy who always wanted to remain a boy. The score includes new arrangements of classic Disney songs and a story featuring one rousing adventure after another.
