‘Airport six’ expected to be sent packing later Tuesday

Larnaca Airport

The six French passport holders detained at Larnaca airport since Saturday are expected to depart to France on Tuesday afternoon, police spokesman Andreas Angelides said.

“It is a matter of procedure, finding a flight,” he told the Cyprus Mail.

The six men, five Turkish nationals and one Algerian, aged between 25 and 32, arrived on Saturday night at 7.30 on a flight from Basel in Switzerland, and raised the suspicions of airport immigration officials when they said they had come to Cyprus as tourists for four days.

According to an Interpol message, the Algerian and two of the Turks had close ties to Islamist networks.

Angelides said the remaining three were being sent back because they had not provided sufficient explanations during interrogations as to why they were in Cyprus.

Tuesday marked their fourth day on the island.
