New art exhibitions opening island-wide

Art lovers in Nicosia and Limassol welcome new exhibitions this month. Just before the year ends, numerous local creatives and artists from abroad present their work as four new showcases are about to open.

This weekend in Nicosia, Nasty Cat Annex welcomes Maria Trillidou and her exhibition Mutual Affections. From Saturday until December 23, Maria presents an installation on autonomous hybrid ecosystems, entangled within an unspecified blank space organising a symbiotic environment. The exhibition features material elements gathered from Cyprus nature during the lockdown period and throughout the life of the artist, and merge with elements of unknown origins that were kept as decorations in the house where she grew up.

Through her practice, Maria touches on contemporary concerns that review the current anthropocentric values and the philosophical consequences of concepts such as human, human nature, immune system and identity. In Mutual Affections, she touches on a re-envisioned world, free from linear chronological measures, where past present and future are entangled carrying an atmosphere of mutualism.

Next week, Gloria Gallery will display an array of creations by artist Olga Spanou. In her showcase titled Backyart, Olga presents a series of creations made from materials she finds in her backyard, her studio and just about anywhere. Micro-sculptures, jewellery and other designs will be at the gallery from Thursday 16 and will remain open for public viewing until January 7.

Also opening in Nicosia next week is the 8th Ceramic Art exhibition at Prozak coffee shop. The annual exhibition returns to the cosy Nicosia café-bar on December 17, 18 and 19. Four exceptional artists, Maria Aloneftou, Thodoris Thou, Christiana Thrasyvoulidou and Koula Kalvari, will exhibit unique works of decorative and applied art, jewellery and other ceramic crafts.

On the same weekend, The Island Club will present The Long Tail by German artist Philip Wiegard. This exhibition comprises a wallpaper installation and a series of polymer clay paintings, including works produced in collaboration with local polymer clay artists following a workshop hosted by the Cyprus Polymer Clay Association in November in Nicosia.
