New and ongoing exhibitions islandwide

1 1

Art exhibitions are taking place all over the island this month, some opening soon, others concluding in just a few days.

On until Friday, is Glavkos Koumides’ solo exhibition at Alpha C.K. Gallery, a retrospective of paintings and sculptures selected from the artist’s diverse work from the last three decades.

Having participated in numerous solo and group showcases featuring printmaking, painting and art installations, Koumides is a celebrated local artist. Representing Cyprus in the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999 was a career highlight and now, this ongoing exhibition presents some of his most important work.

Also happening this week and for a few days only a painting exhibition by Konstantinos Zannetos. The Embassy of Italy in collaboration with art historian Maria Paphiti organise an exhibition of paintings by the Cypriot artist which will open on Thursday at the Telemachos Kanthos Arts Centre in Nicosia.

The concept of the exhibition, open until Saturday, draws on the noble ideas put forward by Italian Renaissance intellectual Giordano Bruno in his book De Gli Eroici Furori. As such, the event will include recitation of Bruno’s poetry in Italian and Greek, as well as the performance of three arias of the same period.

Paphos too has a new exhibition opening this weekend featuring Paphos-based and local photographers. From April 8 to 10, the 7th Paphian Photographers Exhibition will take place at the Old Powerhouse showcasing 20 artists selected through an open call. This year’s exhibition will also have a charitable purpose, as the photographs will be available for sale for €30 each to support the work of the District Volunteerism Coordinate Council Paphos.

9 6a (1)Back in Nicosia, another exhibition continues but at a rather unusual location. Artist Elena Christofidou, wanting to contribute to the humanitarian work of the Hope For Children CRC Policy Centre, has organised the painting exhibition Follow Your Light at Riverland Bio Farm. Until April 10, the artist’s work will be displayed at the farm with all of the net proceeds collected to be donated to support the organisation.

Finally a new exhibition by Despo Frederikou opening at Theatro Polis on April 16. Titled Roman Years. The Journey Continues, the exhibition is organised by NiMAC and is inspired by the history of Cyprus, specifically the Roman era. In particular, the artist is inspired by the famous mosaics of Kato Paphos, which adorned the Roman houses of the area.

The beauty of these mosaics charms the artist, who is looking for new ways to transform them into contemporary works of art. This is an original experiential journey into the history of Cyprus, which offers at the same time many other rich pleasures – visual, historical, and mainly pedagogical. The space of Theatro Polis, with its elevated gallery, allows visitors to observe the exhibition both up close and from above, thus having multiple perspective readings of the works.
