The Cyprus radio television authority (CRTA) on Friday called on radio stations to avoid advertisements or other programmes with strong sound effects, amidst complaints by drivers over distracting traffic sound effects.

Sound effects in advertisements or other programmes on the radio such as the sound of car brakes, klaxons, telephone ringing, ambulance or fire engine alarm sirens may startle and distract listeners who are driving and listening to the radio.

This endangers the safety of the drivers themselves, their passengers, but also other drivers, the authority’s announcement said, explaining it continues to receive such complaints by the public.

CRTA reiterated its call to all broadcasters, including state Cybc, to take all necessary measures to avoid such situations and respect the safety of their listeners.
