Minister says fire service continuously being upgraded

Justice Minister Anna Procopiou has said that continuous efforts are being made to upgrade the fire service.

The efforts are based on upgrades of the volunteer fire brigade, with Procopiou saying that the criteria for becoming a volunteer firefighter have now been written into law.

Procopiou said that since 2019 the volunteer fire service has been active in fighting fires and other natural disasters, and that this year a new information campaign aimed at preventing and detecting fires has been introduced.

With the slogan ‘Be a fire detector’, the campaign aims to encourage people to be aware of fires, adding a ‘fire watcher’ role to the ‘neighbourhood watch’ initiative.

Procopiou said that the government “has as a high priority the evaluation and strengthening of the fire department, and of prevention and suppression of fires in the country”. She added that the government will undertake works to upgrade infrastructure as well as introducing new technologies.
