A.G. Leventis Gallery plays with light and darkness

efi spyrouweb

New artwork by Efi Spyrou will be installed at the AG Leventis Gallery façade on May 16, the International Day of Light and International Museum Day. Titled Black Gold Flakes, the artwork is woven from black fabric, absorbent tapes and yellow reflective tapes. Reflective tapes are usually placed on moving vehicles; the reflection of light makes the object visible in the dark. The fabric, quiet and static, is activated through the movement of light on its surface, inviting the viewer to participate.

Once the reflective surfaces are struck by light, the work is transformed into a flaming, glaring and vibrant object that inspires the spectator. Lightplay is the result of an active dialogue between the artwork and the viewer, the object and the venue. The work addresses the concepts of movement and pause, light and darkness, through its own structural elements, through what initially appears to be a subtractive approach and through the engagement it arouses.

This installation and open-air exhibition, which will remain until the end of June, is not the first time the Athens-based artist presents her work in Cyprus. Her work is in private and public collections worldwide and she recently held the artistic urban action Art Scene Crime Soon in Athens, Thessaloniki and three cities in Cyprus last April-May. In June 2020 she opened her third solo exhibition titled My finest fabulous and amazing math book in Athens while she also founded the artistic non-profit initiative Runonart for the promotion of Cypriot and Greek artworks to the public at home and abroad. This spring, she will return to the Cypriot capital to light up A.G. Leventis’ façade and invite passersby to play with light and darkness.
