Two EAC workers intubated after explosion at Nicosia substation

Two employees of the electricity authority (EAC) are in serious condition at the Nicosia general hospital after being injured during an explosion at the utility’s sub-station in Latsia on Thursday morning, police said.

They will be transferred abroad for treatment.

The explosion occurred at around 11.20 am during maintenance works. The clothes of two employees caught fire after the blast. The flames were extinguished by others who rushed to help. They were taken to the Nicosia general hospital. According to information they have been intubated.

EAC spokesperson Christina Papadopoulos told the Cyprus News Agency it was decided that they will be transferred abroad for specialised treatment. The transport was scheduled for Friday morning.

Papadopoulou said the police and the labour inspection department are investigating what caused the explosion. A committee within the EAC is also carrying out a probe.
