The BFFs helping to save Hawaii’s coral reefs

In this video, we meet the two best friends who have joined forces to help save Hawaii’s coral reefs.

Carissa Cabrera is a marine educator based in Oahu, Hawaii. While on a dive with her friend Lauren Chamberlain, Cabera noticed a coral that was entangled by mono-filament, so the two worked together to untangle it.

This led to Cabrera helping to bring the Marine Debris Program to the Hawaii Marine Animal Response, which Chamberlain now leads.

According to a 2020 report from the World Wildlife Fund, at least 10 per cent of marine trash is from fishing waste. Cabrera says small-scale, sustainable fishing practices can help reduce the amount of fishing gear polluting the oceans.
