Film festival highlights exceptional stories

This autumn has seen a thrilling rise and comeback of festivals and though plenty more annual events remain to return to their full scale, the cultural scene has been busy lately! Arriving in just a few days is another unique festival that highlights exceptional stories.

The Centre for Social Innovation (CSI), in view of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, is organising the Disability Film Festival – two days of screenings on the subject of disability. Taking place on November 15 and 16 at Artos House in Nicosia, the festival will have double screenings every day from 6pm to 10pm and free admission.

Real-life stories that just happened to be film masterpieces are featured in the festival as four films are scheduled to be shown. The first day will begin with the film Still Alice at 6pm which is about a professor of linguistics with Alzheimer’s, whose family and professional life is being tested. Then at 8pm, the 1986 Children of a Lesser God will be screened about a new speech teacher at a school for the deaf who falls in love with the janitor, a deaf woman speechless by choice.

Day two will begin with the well-known film I am Sam with Sean Penn portraying a father with a mental disability who is fighting for the custody of his 7-year-old daughter. Another great film that will be screened is the French comedy-drama, The Untouchables about the unlikely friendship an aristocrat has with a black caretaker from a run-down neighbourhood who the wealthy man hires after he becomes a quadriplegic due to a paragliding accident. All films will be screened in their original language with Greek subtitles and during the screenings, wine, soft drinks and finger food will be offered to the spectators to enjoy inside the screening room of Artos House.
