A 30-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in connection with the double murder of two Russian tourists in Limassol last month.

His is the second arrest in the case. He was arrested on Saturday afternoon and is expected to be remanded in court on Sunday.

Reports said evidence emerged against the suspect during investigations into the case and he made a contradictory statement to the police, leading to his arrest. He is being investigated for premediated murder.

For the same case, police have remanded a 32-year-old man from Syria who admitted to killing Alraeesi Khaiat, 43 and Mariia Gazibagandova, 33, who were reported missing from their Larnaca residence on November 17.

The suspect said he went hunting and when he got back at about 7am he heard the two women talking about him and then he shot them.

He told police he dug a hole in the garden of a house he was working at that was under construction about 1.5 metres deep and 10 metres away from the house. After burying the women there, he covered the area with gravel.

The women had arrived in Cyprus as tourists, one at the beginning of summer, the other around one and a half months ago.
