State been supplying north with electricity since Thursday

The government has been transferring electricity to the north since last week to help meet needs during peak hours, it was reported on Tuesday.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, the government began transferring electricity to the north last Thursday following a request from the Turkish Cypriot side.

The transfer takes place during peak hours – between 4pm and 9.30pm. Sources told the CNA that if the north requests an extension period, this will be granted.

The north has been experiencing daily power cuts in various areas due to problems with four power generators.

The two sides can transfer electricity between them if needs power following an agreement in 2015 to link the two grids on a permanent basis as part of a series of measures to build confidence between the two communities.

CNA reported that the Turkish Cypriot side now owes around 2,100MW of power, given to it between August and October which is expected to be returned through the interconnected grid.
