Larnaca police on Tuesday said they confiscated 400 firecrackers and 75 fireworks during a search of a car belonging to a 26-year-old man.

Officers stopped the car for a check at around 1pm.

Following the discovery of the illegal explosives, the man was taken to Oroklini police station where he was charged in writing and released.

Police have intensified searches for illegal explosives as Easter approaches when their use is traditionally higher.

Fireworks can be used in Cyprus only after permission is granted by the relevant authorities.
