EU project seeks to narrow digital divide in remote schools

The education ministry has launched a European project aimed at mitigating the digital divide in remote school communities and is calling on all school units interested in participating to submit proposals.

“Learning from the Extremes – LfE” aims at tackling the inequalities of accessing digital education by way of enhancing inclusion and reducing the digital divide that exist in remote communities with low connectivity, limited or no access to devices and digital learning tools and content.

“The project is particularly concerned with the development of a strategy that will include proposals on how to achieve an increase in digital accessibility by students and school units in inaccessible and remote areas,” the ministry said.

The project will run for two years, from January 1, 2022, until January 31, 2024, with ten European countries participating including Greece, Portugal, Cyprus, Croatia, Finland, Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy and Spain.

The five most innovative proposals will be funded with up to €16,000 according to the needs of their action plan and will be supported by educational proposals and training aimed at developing their proposal.

Two online informational sessions will take place to which the school units that fall under the remote school category will be invited.
