Cypriot expedition to Antarctica’s highest peak

The Cypriot flag will be flown on Antarctica’s highest peak on Christmas day, in a historic first, the Olympic Committee said on Wednesday.

The expedition to Mount Vinson, which has an altitude of 4,892m, will be part of Seven Summits Cyprus, which aims to raise the Cyprus flag on the world’s highest peaks.

This peak is the most remote, the most expensive for an expedition to conquer, and the coldest of the Seven Summits to climb. It is also the eighth most prominent peak on Earth.

Led by professional mountaineer and mountain guide, Ukrainian-born Cypriot Yevgen Staroselskiy, the Cypriot team recently raised the flag on Kilimanjaro, the highest peak of the African continent, where they spent 11 days.

According to an announcement by the Olympic Committee, the Cypriot team will raise the flag at the top of Antarctica at the end of this week, going down in history as the members of the first official expedition in the history of Cyprus to climb Mount Vinson (4892 m).

Staroselskiy has already raised the Cypriot flag in various parts of the world, such as Mount Everest in Tibet (8848m), Mount Aconcagua in South America (6962m), Mount Denali in North America (6190m) and Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus (5642m).
