Remand for three arrested in marriage scam

Larnaca court

Three Bangladeshi men were remanded in custody for six days in Larnaca on Saturday on suspicion of conducting sham marriages with women from Romania.

The three were arrested during a police operation which carried out searches in three apartments in the same building.

During the operation, officers found a foreign national who was staying on the island without permission and the three suspects.

Police determined that the three men allegedly conducted sham marriages with three Romanian women at Aradippou town hall between January 11 and February 16 this year.

One of the suspects reportedly admitted agreeing with a Romanian woman to buy her a phone and pay her an unspecified amount each month in exchange for marrying him.

Police said the three women arrived on the island just a few days before the wedding and departed a few days later.

The women are being sought.
