The Limassol district court on Tuesday imposed a two-year prison sentence on a 75-year-old man who was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor.

The offences were committed during March 2016.

In a separate case, a 49-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Limassol criminal court for the sexual exploitation of a minor.

According to police, the incident occurred in April 2017 in Limassol.

In October, the children’s organisation Hope for Children called for harsher penalties against sexual offenders, after a 12-month sentence was imposed on a teacher found guilty of sexually harassing underage female students.

Surveys in Cyprus show that one in four children experience some kind of sexual abuse at some stage of their lives, according the Voice Council, responsible for the implementation of the National Strategy for Combating Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children and Child Pornography.
