Gathering for hope

February 15 is International Childhood Cancer Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and expressing support for children and adolescents with cancer, survivors and their families. Exactly that is what an upcoming event aims to do on Monday in Nicosia. Yiota Koufalidou, a cancer survivor herself and a volunteer with the One Dream One Wish Association, has organised an action to empower young cancer fighters.

On Monday at Stasikratous 29, Yiota and volunteers will gather between 9.30am and 2.30pm to decorate a tree with ornaments that local designers have created specifically for this project. 21 designers responded to the invitation and poured their love and hope to beat childhood cancer into designing special ornaments for this day.

All ornaments will be for sale and the sums raised donated to the One Dream One Wish Association to support their work in aiding families and children with cancer, leukaemia and other blood-related illnesses. Karaiskakio Foundation will also be present on the day to register anyone who wishes to become a bone marrow donor. It’s rare nowadays that a physical event takes place and this one, supported by the Nicosia Municipality and strictly following governmental measures in place, happens for a good cause.
