Coronavirus: Eight businesses fined total of more than €16,000 for violations

Eight businesses were fined a total of €16,750 in the past 24 hours for failing to abide by coronavirus measures, police said on Saturday.

Two businesses in Nicosia were fined €4,000 each, one because staff were not wearing masks and the other for allowing dancing.

In Larnaca, a business was fined €4,000 for serving customers at the bar while a second one received the same fine for serving at the bar and allowing dancing.

Staff at a Paphos business were found not wearing masks and given a €750 fine while at a second business, an employee did not have his SafePass and another was fined €500 for not wearing a mask.

Police found a slew of violations at two more businesses in Paphos, which will be taken to court.

The first business was operating without a licence and an employee was improperly wearing his mask, while the second one violated rules on capacity and stayed open past closing time.

The above came out of 2,835 checks carried out from 6am on Friday to 6am on Saturday, during which 23 individuals were also booked, mainly for failing to wear a facemask.

Six people were booked in Nicosia after 1,030 checks, eight in Limassol after 225 inspections and one in Larnaca following 503 checks.

In Paphos, four people were fined after 413 checks, and eight in Famagusta after 449 inspections. No violations were reported in Morphou after 84 checks.

Traffic, marine and port police also carried out 111 and 20 checks respectively without any bookings.
