Chief negotiator for the Cyprus problem Andreas Mavroyiannis has resigned from his post, it emerged on Sunday.

His cited reason is the absence of any developments on the negotiation front, according to daily Politis.

Mavroyiannis submitted his resignation to President Nicos Anastasiades on Friday morning, where it was accepted. The news was confirmed to the paper by government spokesman Marios Pelekanos.

Mavroyiannis will remain at his post until May 15.

Commenting on the resignation, Akel general secretary Stephanos Stephanou said the lack of developments on the Cyprus problem was worrying and Turkey was instrumentalizing this on the ground.
