Undersecretary to the President Petros Demetriou, who underwent heart surgery on Tuesday, is in stable condition and no longer on a ventilator, CyBC reported on Wednesday.

Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos said Demetriou had had a comfortable night on Tuesday, with everything going smoothly “as was expected.”

He is expected to return to his duties in about a month, he added.

Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department of the American Medical Centre Dr Marinos Soteriou told CyBC that Demetriou was communicating normally. He is expected to be moved from the ICU later on Wednesday or on Thursday morning, he added.

He will remain in a normal ward for a few days before being discharged, Soteriou added.

In statements following the surgery on Tuesday, Soteriou, said that following tests it had been determined that Demetriou suffered from a congenital heart defect and had to undergo emergency open heart surgery to correct the problem.

He said Demetriou is expected to make a full recovery.
