Political parties, presidential candidates express sorrow after Archbishop’s death

Presidential candidates and political parties on Monday expressed their sorrow at the death of Archbishop Chrysostomos early in the morning and praised his work both within and outside the church.

Ruling party Disy praised his role in shaping the church throughout his life.

“The late prelate was the best possible figure to lead the Church of Cyprus,” a statement said, adding that his legacy includes the modernisation of the ecclesiastical institution and the establishment of a theological school.

Disy also called him “a spiritual leader with authority, ecclesiastical courage and an unquenchable and lasting interest in the future of Hellenism in Cyprus.”

Disy leader and presidential candidate Averof Neophytou said Chrysostomos II leaves a remarkable trail.

“The late prelate served his flock tirelessly and contributed greatly to the reform of the country’s ecclesiastical institutions, while battling health issues with vigour and Christian fortitude. May God rest his soul,” he said.

Main opposition Akel also mourned the passing of the archbishop.

“In his 16 years of service, he left a clear mark on the ecclesiastical and public affairs of the country, which, as of today, is handed over to the judgment of history,” Akel said.

Presidential candidate Nikos Christodoulides said the prelate would be remembered by all.

“His contribution to the Church of Cyprus will forever be remembered by everyone,” he said. “The bravery and patience with which he faced his illness was indicative of his personality and character.

“The modernisation of the church, the upgrading of the Holy Synod, the strengthening of social service, the construction of important projects, the maintenance of churches in the north and the will to preserve Christian values are all part of his legacy.”

Centre-right Diko, who are backing Christodoulides, also had praise for the leader of the Cyprus church.

“The late Archbishop was a charismatic leader, with a strong and prominent personality. He served the Christian population of our church and country with agility. He faced his difficult last moments with unparalleled vigour, dignity and spirituality,” the party said.

The Green Party also expressed its “sincere condolences to Archbishop Chrysostomos II’s family and loved ones.”
