Lidl Cyprus introduces improved viability label in plastic-reduction move

Lidl Cyprus is introducing the new label “improving & reducing-packaging responsibly” on its private-label items, letting consumers know of the improved viability of the packaging, while adhering to transparency principles.

The label confirms Lidl’s intention to reduce the use of plastic in its private-label product packaging and ensures the potential of full recycling of all private-label product packaging.

Whenever it appears, the label may imply an item’s packaging features:

• At least 80% recyclability
• Content of recycled materials by at least 30%
• Use of alternative materials
• Saving of at least 10% of volume or weight on packaging materials

Where at least one of the above criteria applies, the special labelling shall appear on the front of the product’s packaging, with a brief explanation of the criteria visible on the back or side, or inside the label.

“We want to improve our packaging, making it more sustainable,” explains Lidl Cyprus purchasing department board member Ioannis Karanatsios. “Our customers must be able to easily identify the improved packaging. With the label ‘improving & reducing-packaging responsibly’, we ensure for our customers the appropriate information and transparency.”

Lidl Cyprus is taking part in the REset Plastic initiative, the Schwarz Group’s strategy on plastic. The Group’s aim is to reduce plastic use by 20% by 2025 and to increase the recycling capacity of private-label products to 100%. Aside from reducing usage and (re)design of plastic, recycling, removal and research, are also important areas of action.
