In keeping with the ancient Greek saying: ‘A friend doesn’t abandon a friend in pain or danger’, OPAP Cyprus has donated a state-of-the-art MRI machine to the Nicosia general hospital.

OPAP Cyprus CEO Demetris Aletraris symbolically handed over the machine to Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou last week. State health services managing director Kyriacos Georgiou was also in attendance, and affirmed the importance of the new medical imaging system.

The 1.6-million-euro MRI machine has already been installed in Nicosia general’s radiology section and can offer a wide range of services, including examinations that were not previously available. It also helps reduce a patient’s stress and claustrophobia, promoting serenity and ease during the examination.

“Responding to the difficult times that our country is going through, and out of our timeless sense of compassion, OPAP Cyprus has once again made an important social contribution,” Aletraris said, noting that, similar to other OPAP healthcare efforts, the MRI machine was donated upon consulting with the ministry.

“Despite the fact that universal upheavals caused by the pandemic have seriously affected OPAP Cyprus’ business activities, we have not strayed from the needs of Cypriot society, even for a moment,” Aletraris went on to say, “especially in the field of healthcare, which is top of the list on our social agenda.”

For his part, Minister Ioannou stressed the MRI machine’s role in upgrading the diagnostic value of examinations and enhancing the quality of services offered by public hospitals.

The minister also expressed his gratitude to OPAP Cyprus, which, by “implementing its strategic commitment to the continuous upgrade of medical care on our island, is constantly assisting in the difficult effort toward arming the health ministry”.

OPAP Cyprus’ latest donation follows in a long line of similar offerings, which, especially over the past decade, have contributed to the modernisation of the island’s public hospitals and health institutions, improving the quality of life for residents.
