President Nicos Anastasiades bid farewell to the outgoing UN special envoy to Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute late on Sunday, saying she made “determined efforts to break the deadlock in the Cyprus problem”.

The president bid farewell to the UN official at a meeting in New York. She is assuming a senior position at an international energy and petrochemical company.

Lute was appointed as a UN special envoy on the Cyprus in 2018, following a decision of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

During their meeting, Anastasiades thanked Lute for her “determined efforts to break the current deadlock in the Cyprus Problem”.

The president is due to meet Guterres and Turkish-Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar later on Monday.

In a tweet, Anastasiades expressed hope that “despite the difficulties… we will be able to take steps towards the resumption of meaningful talks” and restated his determination to set the negotiating process back on track, “on the basis of the framework laid out by UNSC resolutions”.
