Lidl Cyprus to boost climate protection efforts with science-based targets

880 en

Lidl Cyprus is taking its efforts to protect the climate to the next level and making science-based targets the basis of its climate goals.

Thanks to the Schwarz Group joining the Science Based Targets initiative, Lidl Cyprus will define goals and measures with the aim of avoiding, reducing or compensating for CO2 emissions in its operations and supply chain. Doing so will allow the company to play its part in striving to keep global warming below 2°C, as set out in the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

“Climate change is threatening our livelihoods and demands action at every level of society. That’s why Lidl Cyprus has been committed to improving climate protection for many years through various measures,” remarked Lidl Cyprus General Manager Spyros Kondilis.

“By focusing on science-based targets, we are now going one step further and laying the foundation for an effective climate strategy. We will update our customers on the measures we are taking and our progress on a regular basis, as we understand that this is an important issue to them as well.”

The Science Based Targets initiative was established in 2015 as a collaboration between central NGOs and institutions, with the aim of fulfilling the Paris climate agreement. As of August 2020, over 900 companies have joined the initiative and are defining their own individual science-based targets – reduction targets for relevant greenhouse gas emissions that are defined on a scientific basis.
